Näak Ambassador Laurin Thorne
“YOU DID NOT WAKE UP TO BE MEDIOCRE.”
I am a Canadian Triathlete and I train through the National Performance Centre based out of Victoria, BC. Through my time as a triathlete I have had many podium results in the Jr. National Series, and was invited into the Rising Star Program. I’m currently competing in Continental Cups where I have had numerous top 8 performances. My goals include racing in World Cups and making it into the World Triathlon Series races. The biggest goal I have is to represent Canada at an Olympic games.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU EVERY DAY TO TRAIN?
I like to keep myself in the present tense and focus on what I can achieve in that moment. I find it useful to take training one session at a time to minimize the stress of the day and keep my head in the right mental space. When the days get tiring and I’m lacking motivation to go train, it helps me to think about my main goal: to make the Olympics. I also have a little motto that I tell myself that when I need to get my act together: “You did not wake up to be mediocre.” And I believe every athlete can resonate with this; we did not wake up early to lack in our best effort for the day. If I’m feeling really desperate for motivation I have a playlist that has very upbeat and exciting music to help boost my mood.
DO YOU HAVE A PERSON WHO INSPIRES YOU?
For years I have looked up to Lolo Jones, an American hurdler and bobsledder. She has been torn down time after time, but continues to have such intense motivation and keeps her positive attitude. My favourite quote of hers is, “I have trained 12 years for an event that takes 12 seconds.” It really puts into perspective the dedication that athletes have to a single demand, and I have so much admiration for it.
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR NOT LOSING ENERGY IN TRIATHLON?
From a fueling and nutritional perspective, food is so important. This includes fueling before a session and getting a recovery snack consumed within 15min after a workout. It is also crucial to take in calories during longer and more intense training sessions. This can include an energy bar, Näak provides an amazing selection, a type of gel, or extra electrolytes in your water bottle. There is also a mental side to having a drop in energy for the sport of triathlon. It can be unhealthy and overwhelming to live in the triathlon world 24/7. I find it useful to take part in other work whether that involves school enrollment, a job, or a long-term hobby.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST RACING MEMORY?
My best memory is my first win at a Jr. Series race when I was 17 years old. I had struggled with performance in sport even though my training was on par for great performances. Before this race I had never even been on a podium, but taking the gold at this event, even at a young age it simply gave me a sense of hope that I could become a good athlete. This was a turning point in how I viewed myself. I realized I was capable for podium performances and it has a positive effect on my mentality.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU LIKE TO DO AFTER A TRIATHLON?
A must-do after a race is to get ice cream! Of course this is after doing a proper cool down and filling nutritional needs first! In the evenings after a race I always enjoy getting a big group together and having everyone go out for dinner. Sometimes in races we get caught up in the seriousness, and it’s nice when the racing is done, the mood is relaxed, and we can hangout with our competition.
What is your favorite music to surpass yourself in training?
I have been a Rihanna fan for a long time; including an old favourite ‘Don’t Stop The Music’. Her pump-up songs really get me in the mood for hard sessions. I also really like Lady Gaga and Sia, more specifically ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Cheap Thrills’ respectively.
What is your favourite Näak product?
I am a huge fan of the energy bars, particularly the flavours Almond & Chocolate and Berries & Nuts. As an athlete I am always looking for extra ways to obtain iron and calcium. The cool thing about the energy bars, and the Näak brand in general, is the use of cricket powder, which is high in iron and calcium, as well as B12 and protein. These bars are portable and provide a quick snack.
